The DAO was organized by a company called Slock.it. Slock.it’s original goal was to allow people to connect devices to the Ethereum blockchain. If you could connect smart locks, cars, and electricity systems to the blockchain, it could create decentralized systems for sharing these devices. To raise money, Slock.it created the DAO.

The DAO has been launched by a community member, not by Slock.it themselves and this has been by design. The DAO (stylized Đ) was a digital decentralized autonomous organization, and a form of investor-directed venture capital fund. It launched in April 2016 after a crowdfunding campaign. By September 2016, it was delisted and had, in effect, become defunct. The DAO had an objective to provide a new decentralized business model for organizing both commercial and non-profit enterprises.
